First official pics of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG

After a leak that occurred last month and after the official announcement of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL Class, the high performance CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG have finally been revealed.

As you can see above, with the CL65 AMG, and below, with the CL63 AMG, the performance models have taken a more aggressive approach to the refreshed design of the 2011 CL Class.

Desing-wise, the CL63 AMG now boasts a mesh grille in the front, while the aluminum strip from the lower intake has been removed. The car now sits on 19-inch wheels, which are complimented, in the rear, by a set of four square-ish tail pipes. The CL65 AMG keeps its aluminum strip, as well as the rear diffuser, but boasts a set of four oval tail pipes. It will also differentiate itself from the CL63 through a set of 20-inch wheels.

Engine-wise, you’ll be happy to hear that the 2011 CL63 AMG is now powered by the new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, instead of the older 6.2-liter, and can output 544 HP with 590 lb-ft of torque. The 2011 CL65 AMG, however, keeps its massive twin-turbo V12 engine, which will send 630 HP and 737 lb-ft of torque to the back wheels.

Expect the performance models to hit a short time after the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL Class will arrive in dealerships around the world.

Citroen GT might still be produced

Citroen GT might still be produced

At the beginning of the week, we reported on a fresh batch of rumors which said that the glorious GTbyCitroen (Citroen GT) supercar concept won’t be seeing the light of day, as the French company opted to invest money in other areas.

Now, the blokes at Autocar say, according to their inside sources, that the Citroen GT’s fate is still undecided, and that it might be heading to production at some point in time.

It seems that even though Citroen is busy building and promoting its new, upmarket DS range, spearheaded by the DS3, the French company still sees some potential in a limited series run of the GT supercar.

No other details were spilled, but at least this gives us some hope that the GTbyCitroen will appear in a production form in the future.

The Smart ForTwo tank needs no explanation

The Smart ForTwo tank needs no explanation

Remember the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon LAPV 6.X off-road concept that looked like it was the result of cross between a tank and a regular Mercedes-Benz G Class?

Well, forget about it, as a new Mercedes product is now quite literally a cross between it and a tank.

What model are we talking about? The Smart ForTwo city car, of course.

As you can see above, the guys at Gizmodo stumbled upon this really odd customization project, which took a regular Smart ForTwo model and fitted it with everything you would normally find on a military tank, from treads to armor and anything in between.

No details on if this unique Smart Tank is functional, but judging from the German license plate (at least we think it’s a license plate) it might be in working condition.

Ford to implement ‘Do Not Disturb’ button on 2011 SYNC system, blocks phone calls and texting

Ford to implement 'Do Not Disturb' button on 2011 SYNC system, blocks phone calls and texting

Driving a car requires the actual driver to be focused on the road and what’s happening around the car at all times. Sadly, with the advent of technology, more and more distractions are becoming responsible for car crashes or other such incidents.

That’s why Ford, with the 2011 iteration of its SYNC infotainment system (specifically the MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch versions), will implement a novel new button called ‘Do Not Disturb’.

If pressed, the SYNC system will temporarily block capabilities “not relevant to the task of driving while the vehicle is in motion.”

More specifically, if you have your mobile phone connected via Bluetooth to the SYNC system, it will divert all incoming phone calls to voicemail, while text messages will be stored on the device for later viewing. This won’t affect voice-activated phone calls, or calling the emergency 911 service, but it will help the driver focus on the actual task of driving.

Besides the restrictions made to the phone, the second generation SYNC system will display fewer navigation destinations, and won’t let drivers access the keypad while the car is in motion.

Frankly, with more and more accidents attributed to distracted driving, we think Ford’s initiative should be applauded. What about you? Share your thoughts below.

Tesla wants more dealerships to look like Apple stores, hires former Apple exec

Tesla wants more dealerships to look like Apple stores, hires former Apple exec

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors really wants to make its products stand out from the rest of the conventional cars.

As such, the company has been militating for existing dealerships to adopt bold styling and make the customers feel differently than they would in regular car dealerships.

Many drew a parallel between Tesla’s desires and how IT company Apple approaches its retail business. Apple stores are famous for offering a unique environment, and cultivating a very loyal customer base.

It seems Tesla realized this as well, as it has just hired former Apple real estate chief George Blakenship, and tasked him with developing the Tesla Motors retail strategy and network.

Blakenship will have plenty of money to throw around, as after Tesla’s IPO, the company will allocate $5 million this year to develop its store chain, while around $5 to $10 million will be set aside for that goal in the next few years.

With sales slipping in recent times, Tesla isn’t doing all that great, but with such a hefty investment and a clear vision, perhaps the company might become the Apple of the car industry.

2011 Ford Fiesta gets new graphics and fresh body kit

Ford is really hyping up the new 2011 Fiesta city car. After we’ve seen an interesting viral video, as well as a tie-in with US TV show American Idol, the Blue Oval is now offering a new array of options aimed at customers who want their Fiesta to be more unique.

As such, the 2011 Ford Fiesta can be ordered with a special body kit, consisting of a new air dam, side skirts and an optional rear spoiler which is exclusive to the hatchback version.

If accessories aren’t your thing, Ford is offering a wide array of LED options, which can decorate anything from the gear shift knob to the foot well or the side sills. All of the LEDs can be chosen depending on the color they emit.

Last but not least, the 2011 Fiesta will also receive a new batch of custom graphics, or “body tattoos”, as Ford calls them. They range from quite refined to downright awkward, but there’s something for everyone in the company’s selection.

Chrysler to set up new dealerships for Fiat models

Chrysler to set up new dealerships for Fiat models

Back when Italy’s Fiat Group acquired ailing US carmaker Chrysler, many believed that the European company would use the existing dealerships of the American brand to branch out, once more, into the North American market.

Now, it seems things aren’t quite so. Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed that a separate dealer network will be set up for the future American Fiat models.

Existing Chrysler dealers will be able to bid for the first 200 franchises, but they are required to make a pretty hefty investment. The company requires both separate buildings, as well as service areas.

The first Fiat model to be sold in the USA will be the 500 city car, which, given the great sales it has been achieving around the world, might become extremely popular.

Still, even if the 500 will become a best seller, we’re pretty sure not a lot of dealers will flock to invest in brand new locations and equipment, especially in these troubled times. What do you think? Share your opinion below.
