Video: Exotic car dealer busted for doing 150 mph speed runs and posting them on YouTube

In case you’re an exotic car dealer which sells models from Ferrari or Lamborghini and gets to handle them everyday, you should thank your lucky stars. But two guys from a St. Louis dealership tried to push their luck, and began taking the fast supercars on speed runs.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they choose to do those speed runs on a public road and in the slow lane, just to have some fun. They also though it might be a good idea to film those runs and post them on YouTube, so people all around the world could see them.

But among all those people were folks from their local police department, which according to Fox News 2 which reported on the story, immediately took the dealer into custody, charging him with reckless driving, among other things.

According to the guy’s boss, Jim Mills, he was quickly reprimanded, even though Mills says he knew about the videos he was uploading onto YouTube for some time. It does sound a bit fishy, but at least the guy caught doing 150 mph will get what he deserves for his actions. Hit the jump to see the complete news story from Fox.

Renault Megane CC presents itself, boasts folding glass roof

Renault Megane CC presents itself, boasts folding glass roof

After showing off the Twingo-based Wind convertible roadster, Renault has now revealed the Megane CC model, with which it will attack competitors like the Peugeot 308CC.

Aiding it in the battle is a novel two-piece folding glass roof, which offers passengers almost the exact feel as having the top down but without the wind messing up their hair or any other interference. The lightweight roof, according to Renault, can be fully opened or closed in just 21 seconds, as opposed to the mechanism in the Wind which can do those operations in just 12 seconds.

The Megane CC, as we revealed last year, will be the first Renault model to receive the new EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gearbox, which promises to be the most fuel-efficient automatic transmission on the market. Available engines include three petrol ones, developing 110, 130 and 140 HP, and another three diesels, developing 110, 130 and 160 HP.

Even though its boot is among the smallest in its class, fitting just 417 liters with the roof up and 211 liters with it down, Renault promises that the experience of driving the new Megane CC won’t be forgotten easily. The live model will be showcased at next month’s Geneva Motor Show but until then you can check out the gallery below.

Jaguar prepping electric XJ

Jaguar prepping electric XJ

New reports indicate that Jaguar is working and even has a fully-working prototype of an electric XJ sedan, which not only uses a motor connected to a battery pack, but also a range-extending engine which fills up the batteries as you drive along.

It seems that Jaguar is betting big on such types of technologies, and wants to create something that will truly be useful in day to day life, hence the generator, a 35 kW 1.3-liter three-cylinder unit created by Lotus with this specific goal in mind. The true power of the car will come from an electric motor though, capable of 145 kW (around 194 HP) of power and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Performance and emissions figures are quite impressive, as the electric XJ can go for 600 miles, uses just 57 mpg, emits under 120 g/km of CO2 and has a top speed of 112 mph. According to inside sources, the removal of the conventional powertrain has drastically lowered the weight of the car and also improved handling.

This isn’t the first green outing for the current XJ, as the British brand also presented the XJ Limo Green Concept last year. Overall, the promise of such a Jag is pretty alluring. What do you think?

Toyota admits brake defect in 2010 Prius, will recall 270,000 vehicles

Toyota admits brake defect in 2010 Prius, will recall 270,000 vehicles

We’ve probably used this saying a bit too much around here, especially when talking about Toyota, but when it rains, it pours. The company has just admitted that there is a brake defect in the third generation 2010 Prius hybrid, and that a recall is scheduled.

Yesterday we revealed that the company is being forced by authorities in both Japan and USA to investigate the braking system on the new Prius hybrid. This is due to many claims arriving from customers which are experiencing moments without response from the brakes, especially at slow speed or on wet surfaces.

According to the Japanese company, this is due to the brake regeneration system, as the Prius uses both that type of technology and a conventional friction-based one, and, for a few seconds in certain conditions, the electronic management unit doesn’t know which to use.

According to Nikkei News, it seems that the company will recall around 270,000 Prius units back to their dealerships in both Japan and the USA, where a fix will be installed.

Overall, Toyota is going from bad to worse to apocalyptic with this new recall, which is being added to the brake pedal and the floor mat ones, which are also underway.

“I’m unlikely to switch to Formula 1,” Valentino Rossi says

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 01:01 AM PST

During the last few weeks, just after famed MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi went to Ferrari’s Formula 1 team and did a few practice laps on a Barcelona circuit, many voices have been talking about his oft-rumored switch, from two to four wheels.

We’ve even seen his team manager at Yamaha say, jokingly at least, that his major fear is that Ferrari might steal Rossi from his group. The CEO of the Italian supercar manufacturer, Luca di Montezemolo also revealed a few days ago that Rossi has the potential to become a Formula 1 champion.

Now though, Rossi himself released a statement in which he says that it’s highly unlikely for him to make a switch to Formula 1, at least for the moment.

“I had the chance to drive the Ferrari F1 car in Barcelona," he said, "It was great, I had fun and it was a very good test, with good lap times, but I think that it will be very difficult to see me driving in Formula One.”

The rider’s switch to F1, at least for the moment, is only possible if teams will be allowed to race a third car in the future, as not even Ferrari doesn’t want to sacrifice a trained F1 driver for the potential Rossi showed.

Jaguar returns to 24 Hours of Le Mans with XKR GT2

Jaguar is one of the most successful British brands when it comes to motorsport, establishing itself in such competitions for 75 years. Now, the company has just announced that it will be entering this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans competition with a factory-sponsored XKR GT2 model, run by the JaguarRSR team.

The company is seeking once again to become the best of the best, albeit in the GT2 category and not the full-pledge one. It has also emphasized its success in the competition, managing to win at Le Mans in its first year of participation in 1951 with the C-Type, and continue with models like the D-Type or the XJR prototypes, which ran in the early 1990s (all pictured above).

US Jaguar fans will also be able to enjoy this special XKR GT2 model in the American Le Mans Series, in which it will also participate.

Honda announces “Live Every Liter” campaign for the CR-Z hybrid

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 11:18 PM PST

Honda has just announced that it will be promoting the new CR-Z hybrid sports coupe with a feature-length film created by famous European director Claudio Von Planta.

But don’t go thinking that Von Planta will just film the CR-Z inside and out, as the company also started this special website, called Live Every Liter, where participants can register and post their own idea of the perfect drive with the CR-Z.

After they’re done posting it, they have the opportunity to share it with friends via various social networks, in order to get votes. Those with the best and most popular ideas will get to turn that drive into reality with a special CR-Z filled with cameras. These will capture the emotions and the reactions of the drivers and their friends while on their dream trip. Von Planta will then step in to edit this footage in order to finally create the feature film.

People can register on the website until March 19, 2010, but you’ll have to be living in Europe to be eligible.

Seat presents the Ibiza ST

Seat, after teasing its fans with last year’s IBZ concept, has finally revealed the newest variant of its popular Ibiza B segment hatchback, the Ibiza Sport Tourer (ST), which will, of course, cater to the wagon market.

The new model sports a very interesting design, filled with many subtle touches which make the ST a great choice if you’re in the market for a new wagon model. Add in the three petrol and three diesel engines, with power ranging from 70 to 105 HP, and you’ll be pretty happy.

Seat presents the Ibiza ST

Even though it suffered quite a few changes from the gorgeous IBZ concept, including a tone down of the rear light cluster, the side panels and the front arches, not to mention the headlamps, the new Seat Ibiza ST will make a lasting impression on the many people who will be attending the Geneva Motor Show this March.
