Video: Woman driver in Scion xB proves her skills in police pursuit

Many men tend to mock women drivers saying that they can’t match the skills of any testosterone-infused representative of the species. But this recent video of a woman in a police pursuit might give them something to think about.

Not only did she manage to evade the police for some time, in a Scion xB of all things, but she also saw fit to get out of the car and openly mock them. It’s true she forgot she had an automatic gearbox and the car started to move on its own, but it’s still a great video to watch.

Hit the jump to see it.

Posted: 21 Jan 2010 02:09 AM PST

Deciding that all this snow would’ve gone to waste if we didn’t channel our inner rally driver, we decided to test out the Citroen C4 by Loeb limited edition, which honors the very successful rally driver.

Even though it bears Sebastien Loeb’s name, the car isn’t all that sporty, but, as we learned in the time we spent with it, can be pretty agile when needed. Plus, the extra options are certain to make your trips with this special C4 more enjoyable.

You can check out the complete test drive of the Citroen C4 limited edition by Loeb at this link.

First leaked photos of 2011 BMW 335is appear

First leaked photos of 2011 BMW 335is appear

Last week BMW revealed the 2011 facelift for the 3 Series Coupe and Cabriolet editions, which included not only a restyled exterior, but also some new engines for the whole lineup.

But by far the biggest news arriving with this facelift was the rumored appearance of the 335is in both coupe and cabriolet flavors. This new performance edition will be powered by the N54 twin-turbo engine, which develops 322 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque in regular. I’m saying regular mode, because the new models will have an overboost function which adds another 37 lb-ft, taking the total to 369 lb-ft of total torque.

Besides the increased power of the engine, the 335is will have a sports exhaust system, with black chrome tailpipes, an additional water cooler, a high output cooling fan and will see its fog lights removed for … you guessed it, additional engine cooling. The new “is” model will feature the seven-speed double clutch transmission as an option.

First leaked photos of 2011 BMW 335is appear

Up until now though, we could only speculate on the car, but thanks to a clever leak, discovered by the guys at BMWBlog, a batch of photos showcasing the performance model have been revealed, confirming that it will arrive soon.

Mercedes-Benz cars to have “auto-swerve” system in the next five years

Posted: 21 Jan 2010 01:44 AM PST

Mercedes-Benz always tries to implement the best safety systems in its cars, but a new type of technology currently being developed by the German company might really change the whole industry.

According to Mercedes’ chief of safety research and development, Ulrich Mellinghoff, an auto-swerve system will be implemented in the next five years on MB models, in order to avoid collisions or pedestrian accidents.

According to the executive, in 80% of accidents involving people, just 20% of the front end of the car actually hits them. This new system would be able to swerve the car when it detects a possible collision by around one or two feet, avoiding the accident altogether.

Of course such a system won’t take away the control of the car from driver, which will be warned prior to the collision by the system. In case no response is recorded, the swerve will happen automatically.

Frankly, I think that such swerving may be a bit dangerous, especially considering incoming traffic, so my money is still on Volvo’s automatic braking system, which will stop the car if a possible pedestrian collision might happen. What do you think? Would auto-swerving save lives?

Mitsubishi to present ASX compact crossover in Geneva

Great news for Japanese compact crossover fans, as Mitsubishi has just announced that it will be bringing its newest model, the ASX, to the Geneva Motor Show. You might have heard about this model under its Japanese name, the RVR, which was revealed at the end of last year.

The new ASX will be scheduled to hit the European market in late spring, as opposed to its Japanese brother, which will be hitting showrooms in February. The compact crossover will slot in under the Outlander, and will feature, among other engine choices, a 1.8-liter turbocharged direct injection diesel, which is compliant with Euro 5 emissions regulations. It will be coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox and also boast “Automatic Stop & Go”.

Overall, if priced right, the Mitsubishi ASX/RVR might be a hit for Mitsubishi. Hopefully we will learn more about the US version and what it will be named soon.

Ford Mustang to pace Daytona 500, limited edition run will be available

Ford is definitely betting big on the 2011 Mustang muscle car, and markets the new 412 HP 5.0-liter V8 engine it has under the bonnet for all its worth. That’s why the new car will be pacing the famous Daytona 500 Nascar race, when it will be held on February 14, at the Daytona International Speedway.

The special Mustang will be decked out in a special Daytona 500 paint scheme with Race Red, have a Ford Racing suspension, a strut tower brace and mufflers, unique painted wheels, and a customized interior with things like branded lit door sill plates.

You should also know that Ford is commemorating this occasion with a limited run of 50 cars, which will be sold to the public. If you want to buy the actual pace car which will be in the race, an auction will be held at Barrett-Jackson on January 23, with the proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Toyota isn’t implementing brake overrides because of sudden acceleration complaints, executive says

Toyota isn't implementing brake overrides because of sudden acceleration complaints, executive says

Toyota is quite busy trying to implement a new brake override system in all of its models by the end of 2010, but this measure wasn’t taken because of the recent sudden acceleration scandals and complaints, at least according to the company’s general quality manager, Hiroyuki Yokoyama.

He recently revealed that the recent problems in quality have been generated by the big growth experienced by the Japanese company, and many production plants just weren’t able to keep up with demand. That doesn’t mean that faults were made with the current throttle systems, which, according to Yokoyama, have plenty of failsafe triggers, but the engine start/stop button system might be re-imagined in the future, said the executive.

While I’m sure Yokoyama tries to keep the Toyota brand image high, you can be sure that the recent scandals have clearly urged the Japanese carmaker to get the new safety systems on cars as soon as possible.

Video: Honda CR-Z was inspired by Lotus Elise, was made with fun-to-drive aspect in mind, engineer says

Honda has just published a recent video with one of the chief engineers of its newly revealed CR-Z hybrid sports coupe, Terukazu Torikai.

According to his statements, the team spent a great deal of time analyzing the Mini, the Volkswagen Scirocco and even the Lotus Elise, in order to see what made them tick, and create a fun-to-drive model like the CR-Z.

Frankly, I had high hopes for the Japanese hybrid, but the power figures of 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque from both the 1.5-liter gasoline engine and the electric motor aren’t really keeping my hopes high for when the model hits this spring.

Hit the jump to see the video of the Honda CR-Z.

Volkswagen New Beetle pick-up truck edition has everything you need for hauling flowers

We’ve covered quite a few interesting customization projects from the Tokyo Auto Salon, most of them based on Japanese models. But this doesn’t meant that European or US cars were neglected.

In the spirit of equal opportunity tuning, Japan’s Body Shop Hayashi decided to tackle the Volkswagen New Beetle. But they didn’t take the conventional route of adding a body kit or some go-fast vinyls, but actually modified the small model into a … wait for it … pick-up truck!

And how did they want to showcase the new “rugged” hauling ability of the VW? By throwing in flowers into the truck bed. Sadly no performance details were given about this Amarok-rivalling pick-up.
